THE ENTRY
The Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture opened in Lagos in January 1977. Often called FESTAC ’77, the event brought together thousands of artists, writers, musicians, dancers, filmmakers, and scholars.
WHY IT MATTERED
FESTAC created a rare large-scale meeting point for continental African and diasporic culture, placing music inside a wider conversation about identity, liberation, art, and global Black connection.
