Rapper’s Delight Takes Rap Onto the Charts

BreakthroughRecord ReleaseDiscoHip-HopHip-Hop History

Released in 1979, “Rapper’s Delight” adapted the energy of live MC performance into a commercially distributed single. Produced under Sylvia Robinson’s direction, it helped introduce rap to listeners far beyond the parties and neighborhoods where the culture had formed.

The record proved that rap could travel through the established record industry, helping move hip-hop from a live local culture toward a global recorded genre.
