THE ENTRY
On April 14, 2018, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella. The performance drew from historically Black college and university marching bands, step shows, majorette traditions, Black Greek life, R&B, hip-hop, and pop spectacle.
WHY IT MATTERED
The performance placed Black educational and performance traditions at the center of a global festival stage while demonstrating a new level of authorship, scale, and archival intention in live pop production.
